Barcodes
Generate, print, and scan barcodes for fast and accurate product identification.
Barcodes let you identify products quickly and reduce manual errors at the point of sale, during stock-takes, and when receiving deliveries. Eleo can auto-generate barcodes for your products, print them as labels, and scan them using the Eleo mobile app or a connected barcode scanner.
Auto-generating barcodes
When you create a product, Eleo can generate a barcode for it automatically. If the product already has a manufacturer barcode (such as a UPC or EAN code), you can enter it manually in the Barcode field on the product form. For products without an existing barcode, leave the field blank and Eleo will assign one when you save.
Products with variants get a unique barcode for each variant. This means you can scan a barcode and Eleo knows not just which product it is, but the exact size, colour, or other variant.
Printing barcode labels
To print barcode labels, navigate to the product detail page and click Print Barcode. You can configure:
- Label size — Choose from standard label sizes that match common label printers and sheets.
- Quantity — Set how many labels to print per product or variant.
- Include product name — Optionally print the product name and price alongside the barcode for quick visual reference.
You can also print barcodes in bulk from the Products list by selecting multiple products and choosing Print Barcodes from the bulk actions menu.
Scanning barcodes
Barcodes can be scanned using:
- Eleo mobile app — Use your phone or tablet camera to scan barcodes directly within the Eleo app. This works in POS mode for adding items to a sale, and in inventory mode for quick stock lookups and adjustments.
- USB / Bluetooth barcode scanner — Connect a hardware barcode scanner to your computer or tablet. When you scan a barcode, Eleo automatically searches for the matching product and adds it to the current context (sale, stock adjustment, etc.).
Supported barcode formats
Eleo supports the most widely used barcode standards:
- EAN-13 — The international standard for retail products, commonly used in Europe and Africa.
- UPC-A — The 12-digit format widely used in North America.
- Code 128 — A high-density format that supports alphanumeric characters, often used for internal SKUs.
- QR Code — Two-dimensional codes that can encode longer data strings and are easily scanned by phone cameras.
Barcodes are one of the fastest ways to add products during a sale. Instead of searching by name, simply scan the barcode and the product is added to the order instantly. This is especially helpful during busy checkout periods.
