Product Options
Let customers customise a product when they order — sizes, extras, preparation — with rules you control.
Product options are the choices a customer makes when ordering one product: the size of a coffee, the toppings on a pizza, “no onions”. Each choice can add to the price, be required or optional, and limit how many things can be picked. You build options once and assign them to as many products as you like.
Three things to know
- Option group — one choice at checkout, e.g. “Size” or “Toppings”. A group carries the rules: whether it is required, and the fewest and most options a customer can pick from it.
- Option — one thing inside a group that a customer can pick, e.g. “Large” or “Extra cheese”. An option has its own price (added on top of the product) and can optionally track stock.
- Option category — an optional label that keeps groups organised once you have many, e.g. “Extras” or “Preparation”. Categories only affect your lists.
Setting up options step-by-step
- 1
Create an option group
Go to Catalog → Product Options → Option Groups and click New option group. Name it the way a customer would read it (“Choose your size”), then set the selection rules:
- Required — the customer must pick from this group before the product can be added to the cart.
- Minimum / maximum selected — how many options they can pick. A maximum of 1 makes it a single choice; 0 means no limit.
- Max quantity per option — whether they can add the same option more than once (“double cheese”).
The form shows a live sentence — “Required · pick 1–3” — so you can check the rules read the way you mean them.
- 2
Add the options
After creating the group you land on its page with the Add option form open. Add each thing a customer can pick. Give an option a price only if it costs extra — leave it at 0 for a free choice. Option names are unique across your whole store, so “Small” can only exist in one group.
- 3
Assign the group to a product
Open the product and go to its Options tab. Click Assign a group and pick one. You can override the group’s rules for this product only — for example make “Toppings” required on the build-your-own pizza but optional everywhere else. Groups already on the product are not offered again; use Edit rules on them instead.
- 4
Or start from a template
The Options tab also offers Browse templates: ready-made groups for common cases (drink sizes, pizza toppings, cooking preferences). Applying a template creates the groups and options in your store and assigns them to the product in one go. You can edit them afterwards like any other group.
Options and stock
Most options need no stock tracking. For the ones that do — an extra that is a real product you count — you have two choices on the option:
- Link a product and turn on Track stock: the option is hidden automatically whenever that product is out of stock.
- Turn on Track stock without a linked product and enter the option’s own stock and thresholds.
Managing existing options
- Renaming a group or option updates it everywhere it is used.
- Hiding — turn off Available on an option, or Enabled on a group, to stop offering it without deleting anything. Turn it back on any time.
- Removing a group from a product (the Remove button on the product’s Options tab) only affects that product; the group and its options are kept.
- Changing a group’s default rules updates every product that has not overridden them; per-product overrides are kept.
Options appear on the product at the POS, the kiosk, your storefront and the marketplace, with the rules enforced before the item goes in the cart. A group with no options, or one that is disabled, is simply skipped.
One decision per group. “Size” with three options beats a “Choices” group with twelve. Name groups the way the question reads on a menu — the name is the heading customers see.
