Brands & Categories

Organise your product catalogue with brands and hierarchical categories.

As your product catalogue grows, keeping it organised becomes essential. Brands and categories give you two complementary ways to classify products — brands identify the manufacturer or label, while categories group products by type or department. Together, they make it easier for your team to find products quickly and for customers browsing your storefront to discover what they are looking for.

Brands

A brand represents the manufacturer, designer, or label associated with a product. Each product can belong to one brand. Brands are useful when you stock items from multiple suppliers and want to filter or report on sales by brand.

Creating a brand

There is no separate Brands screen. Brands are created from the product form: open a product and, under the Brand dropdown, click Create Brand. Enter a Brand Name (required) and, if you want them, a Description and Website. The new brand becomes selectable straight away, without leaving the product.

Assigning a brand to a product

Pick one from the Brand dropdown on the product form. A brand is optional — a product saves fine without one — and a product carries at most a single brand.

Categories

A category says what kind of product something is — a tree with parent and child relationships, so “Beverages” has “Soft Drinks”, “Juices” and “Water” beneath it. A product sits in exactly one category.

Choosing a category

Categories are not something you create. Eleo ships one platform-wide category tree, shared by every store, and you classify a product by picking the closest match from the Category dropdown on the product form. Unlike brand, a category is required — a product cannot be saved without one.

The shared tree is what lets Eleo compare like with like across stores, drive marketplace browsing, and ship sensible reporting groupings without every merchant inventing their own taxonomy.

Filtering products by brand or category

On the Products list, use the Brand and Category filter dropdowns to narrow the list to specific subsets of your catalogue. These filters are also available on the stock overview, reports, and order creation screens, giving you a consistent way to work with product segments across Eleo.

Using categories for storefront organisation

If you have an online storefront enabled, your category structure drives the customer-facing navigation. Top-level categories appear as main menu items, and child categories become sub-menus. Each product appears under the single category you assigned it, so picking the most specific accurate match is what makes storefront browsing work.

Pick the most specific match

Because the tree is shared and a product sits in exactly one category, the useful discipline is choosing the deepest category that is genuinely accurate rather than a broad one. Nothing downstream — storefront navigation, reporting groupings, marketplace browsing — can be more precise than the category you picked.
